Audiology at St. Andrew's Clinic
Dr. Janis Wolfe Gasch of Arizona Hearing Specialists has been treating patients at St.Andrew's Clinic in Nogales, Ariz. for 20 years. She was awarded Humanitarian of the Year in 2003 for her work with the clinic, and plans on volunteering her services for many more years.
Dr. Wolfe Gasch treats about 25 children each clinic, doing hearing tests and fitting around 3-4 pairs of new or recycled hearing aids. All of the hearing aids are donated to the clinic and although Dr. Wolfe Gasch rarely runs out of hearing aids, donations are always appreciated.
For every 50 pair of old hearing aids Dr. Wolfe Gasch turns in, she receives three brand new ones. Hearing aids range from $1500-3000, but are given to the children of the clinic at no cost.
The audiology department of the clinic, where Dr. Wolfe Gasch works, is made of up two parts: hearing testing and hearing aid fittings.
Hearing tests used to be performed in a small office within the church, but when the clinic started taking in more patients the silence needed was unavailable. A soundproof trailer, which is parked behind the clinic, is now used for hearing testing.
