Humane Borders

Humane Borders is a non-profit organization that provides water to migrants who endure the long journey through the desert in hopes of reaching the other side of the border.

Rev. Robin Hoover founded the organization in June 2000. Although the organization is only about 8 years old, Rev. Hoover has 16 years of doctoral research and border experience.

According to an information packet distributed by the organization, "In April 2002, the Border Patrol credited Humane Borders water stations with saving the lives of 33 migrants rescued from imminent death in one day."

The water stations are regularly regulated.

"In the first four years, permits to place 70 water stations have been negotiated with the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, Pima County, City of Tucson, and several private land owners, plus Grupo Beta in Sonora, Mexico," as stated by the organization's information packet.

Humane Borders welcomes anyone interested in volunteering. The positions range from servicing the water stations to working in the office or running errands. It is up to the individual to decide how involved he/she would like to be in the program.

Jeff Millsap and fellow volunteer assist onlookers with any questions they might have about the organization
