Mariposa Community Health Center, Inc. provides seniors 55 and over with nutritional education and fitness classes as part of their Enhance Fitness Program in Nogales, Ariz.

The free, six week program is funded by the state's Living Well program, according to Rosie Piper, health promotion manager at Mariposa Community Health Center. The health center is a community organization run by the Santa Cruz Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, in Nogales, Ariz.

The Enhance Fitness Progam educates participants about chronic diseases like diabetes, and informs them about the importance of eating nutritiously. Participants meet for classes on nutrition and fitness three times a week.

The Enhance Fitness program includes a chronic disease self-management program, developed at Stanford University, to teach people who already have a disease about living well with it, according to Piper.

The program is implemented by trainers, like Piper, and the fitness class teacher, Marsha Barkyoumb, who were recently trained in nutrition, physical activity, and disease management.

"It trains people as master trainers and instructors to implement the program," said Piper.

Mariposa Community Health Center's instructors recently recieved training to teach the classes, which started in September.

On Wednesday, September 23, participants met for one of their fitness classes, which included stretching, cardio and weights. Participants include local community members and relatives of previous participants. The second series of the 6 week workshop will start in January of 2010, according to Rosie Piper. Any women over fifty-five are welcome to participate in the community center's Living Well workshop free of charge. More information is available by contacting Mariposa Community Health Center.
